Understanding Food Allergies vs. Sensitivities
Food reactions involve the immune system and antibodies. There are two main types of reactions:
Food Allergies (IgE Reactions):Â These are immediate responses triggered by IgE antibodies. Symptoms appear within minutes of eating the allergen and can be severe, such as hives, respiratory issues, or anaphylaxis. Immediate treatment by a specialist is advised for severe cases.
Food Sensitivities (IgG Reactions):Â These involve IgG antibodies and manifest as delayed reactions, typically occurring hours to days after consuming the offending food. Symptoms are often less dramatic but can include digestive issues, migraines, mood disorders, and weight gain.
Symptoms and Conditions Linked to Food Sensitivities
Digestive Disorders: Conditions like IBS and Crohn’s disease are associated with IgG reactions. Removing reactive foods can improve symptoms.
Migraines: Research suggests eliminating reactive foods may reduce headache frequency and intensity.
Mood/Attention Disorders:Â IgG reactions may affect mental health, contributing to issues like depression and hyperactivity. Dietary changes might help alleviate these symptoms.
Weight Gain:Â Inflammation from IgG reactions can lead to fluid retention and increased appetite, potentially causing weight gain.
Importance of Testing
Food sensitivity testing can simplify identifying problematic foods, especially given that reactions may be delayed. It can pinpoint specific foods causing symptoms, which is crucial for managing conditions like IBS or chronic migraines. Testing helps avoid the lengthy and complex process of elimination diets.
Testing and Results
From just a few drops of blood, the RMA FSTâ„¢ (Rocky Mountain Analytical Food Sensitivity Test) assesses IgG reactions to a wide range of foods. Results are categorized into non-reactive (green), borderline (orange), and reactive (red) to help identify which foods to avoid. (See sample result.)
Choosing the Right Test
Rocky Mountain Analytical offers different panels for testing:
Basic Panel:Â Covers over 125 foods, suitable for the most common sensitivities.
Vegetarian Panel:Â Focuses on over 160 foods excluding meat, fish, and seafood.
Enhanced Panel:Â Includes over 220 foods, ideal if you have a diverse diet or need comprehensive testing (see list)
Next Steps
The Pharmacy Lab will provide your test results within 7-10 days after testing. Once we receive your results, consult with one of our pharmacists to develop a plan for eliminating reactive foods from your diet. Many people notice improvements within a few weeks, although some may experience temporary withdrawal symptoms. within a few weeks, although some may experience temporary withdrawal symptoms. Follow the dietary recommendations, monitor your symptoms, and schedule a follow-up with one of our pharmacists for additional guidance.
